Different Kind of Watch Movements

By Oscar Messina

Before buying a watch it is crucial to learn what type of movement will suit your taste. There are three main kinds of movement: Quartz Watches, Manual Wind Watches, and Automatic Watches

QUARTZ WATCHES:

There are three types of Quartz watches. They are the regular quartz , auto-quartz, and solar. The regular quartz runs with batteries. This particular kind of watch requires very little maintenance , usually a battery replacement every other year. The second type of quartz movement is a mixture of quartz and self-winding watch. In other words the part of the mechanism that is automatic charges a small generator inside the mechanism. The most known companies that make these models are Seiko, Tissot , and Omega and they are called "Kinetic ", "Autoquartz ", and "Omegamatic" respectively. The Solar watches as the name implies are charged with the energy of the Sun . They contain cells located on the watches' faces that charge the generator of the watch. The "Eco- Drive" is the most well-known model produced by Citizen .

MANUAL WIND WATCHES:

These were the first type of movement made . In other words it can be said that they are the classic movements. For this reason they are very desirable by watch enthusiasts. These watches need to be manually wound usually once a day. Once the watch is wound it will keep a power reserve to the next winding. In such cases in more expensive models they can keep up to 18 days or more of power reserve and usually have a power reserve indicator. These expensive models made by Swiss Brands such as Jaeger-Lecoultre and Franck Muller can cost higher than $500,000 depending on their complications.

AUTOMATIC WATCHES:

These type of watches are called automatic or self-winding because they do not need to be wound by the wearer. It winds itself with the movement of the body. There is a metal that acts like a pendulum that rotates back and forth everytime the wearer moves that charges the mechanism. These type of watches have a power reserve like the Manual winding watches that permit the watch to be stationed for more than 24 hours without losing time. All major Swiss manufacturers produce these watches and as well as some Japanese companies .

It is good to keep in mind that each of these type of watch movements have their advantages and disadvantages. For example , You might think that automatic watches are better than quartz watches because you do need to replace a battery, however one advantage of quartz watches is that they are more accurate than automatic watches. What really matters is that they all show the time , the most valuable asset in life. - 31400
