Simply The Best Luxury Watches In The World

By Sam Bousacks

When most people think of Movado watches they envision a dark dial design with a singular dot at the twelve o'clock position. Although the simplicity of this design has been their trademark, there are and have been different styles of Movado watches. The single dot design is notably characterized in their museum style design. The word Movado comes from the Esperanto word for always in motion. The language, Esperanto, was invented in 1887 by Zamenhof, a Polish doctor, and is considered an artificial language.

Movado was founded in 1881 by a nineteen year old watchmaker in La Chax-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The company holds over a hundred patents and over two hundred award for innovation and style. Among the well known watches in Movado's history include: 1912 Polyplan, WWI Soldier's Watch, 1927 Erneto, 1950's Kingmatic, and the modern Movado museum watch. The Erneto is unique in its design as it is pillow shaped and is automatically wound by the opening and closing of the case.

The Museum watch reached prominence with its acceptance by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in its permanent watch collection. Movado has also been known as a promoter of the arts. In fact, at one time it commissioned Andy Warhol for designs. Other organizations supported by the Swiss company are the Joffrey Ballet, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center for the Arts.

Movado has designed thirty different Movado watch collections. They are also typified in some fashion with the single dot designation. A standout is the Series 800 which in appearance is somewhat analogous to a few other prominent watch makers. However, this collection, the Series 800, has some well known sports luminaries as its users.

Some of the more popular collections are the Amorosa, Esprensa, 14k Gold, Junior Sport, Museum, and Series 800. The Amorosa is more like a wrist bangle watch with removable links. It comes in either two tone, solid, or 18k gold plated stainless steel. It can be further adorned with diamonds and has a sapphire crystal as do most all Movados. The Esperansa is similar to the Amorosa but has different diamond settings.

The 14k gold watches come with leather straps and silvered soleil dials. The Junior Sport is marked with the black museum dial and brushed stainless steel. The Series 800 comes in three sizes with a surgical grade performance steel case. Most Movados are water resistant to 30 meters, the Series 800 is resistant to 200 meters.

For those looking to purchase a Movado, most of the large retailers in North America and certain international locations have a variety of styles for sale. For online purchases, there are only eight listed authorized dealers. Some of these stores include Macy's, Nordstroms, Kay's, Gordon's, and Zale's. Recent addition to Movado line of products include the Movado Master and the Movado Bold. - 31400
